    The Silent Chest, Jack Rackham’s revenge


    What's an escape game?

    This year (in 2019) the Oxford dictionary has just added the word escape room to its directory. This is what we find in this famous dictionary:

    escape room, noun :

    a game where people are locked into a room and have to find a way to escape by finding clues (= signs or information that help you to find the answer to a problem or mystery) in it, and solving puzzles, or a special room where this is done:

    An escape room is a great thing to try with a bunch of friends or workmates.


    The limits of this definition were quickly reached by game designers who keep pushing them back to make players dream and travel.


    Trip Trap is a big name in Geneva, they make dreams come true and think big and then sometimes they do the opposite and compile a room in 1 box.

    No I'm not talking nonsense... let me tell you about this strange adventure we experienced here.


    We were quietly debriefing our adventure with Captain Rackham when a strange character in a white coat approaches us.

    He introduces himself as the assistant to the renowned archaeologist Adrian Grant... He sent us a message and two boxes from Costa Rica. We have to open the two boxes, protected by many mechanisms, as soon as possible to discover the secret of the pirate Jack Rackham (what, you're going to tell me : again... yes, he's a bit vengeful, this gentleman).


    The gold discs of the Aztec king Takapan that confer enormous powers to those who possess them. A satellite communication with Professor Grant, still in Costa Rica, tells you that the chests were booby-trapped and that a mechanism was triggered from the moment they left their cave. "You have very little time left to try and open them and get your hands on the gold discs".


    So we follow the assistant in an elevator, a freight elevator to be specific, to the professor's office. Finally when I say office, it's more like a mini museum with subdued light and showcases displaying artworks everywhere, but there are mostly 2 large boxes on 2 tables on the 2 opposite sides of this space. Ah yes, it's true, I hadn't told you that yet.

    This "escape" is only played in the form of a battle, 2 teams fighting each other around a box, to try to open it as quickly as possible.


    We've all loved the silent chests. Their workmanship is beautiful and neat, the puzzles (naturally linear), really interesting, surprising and so consistent with the universe created here.

    We enjoyed ourselves and I must admit that we didn't see the time go by.


    The game master has a perfect place in this room and ours held it particularly well, all his interventions were welcome and in the role.

    One element gave me the impression of travelling back to my childhood and finding myself in Tintin story.


    We know that these boxes are also mobile and can be played anywhere, we find however that it would be a real shame not to play in this place and in its decor, which even if it is not essential to play is so beautiful.


    I can't say more than: we really liked the silent chests thanks to interesting puzzles, the original approach of an escape, a neat and beautiful realization and a well thought-out role for the game master.

    • The obligation to play in 2 groups (it's a pity for smaller groups)
    • A rather undeveloped narrative in the end
    • Being able to "cheat" by watching what other people do
    • The idea of being able to play the silent chests in another environment so much we liked this one.
